If Oil & Gas Companies Were World Cup Teams…
February 23, 2010 – 4:28 amI’m a football fanatic and like most people am looking forward to the World Cup in South Africa in June. Being an England fan, I’m doing what I always do at this point in time in the run-up to a major football tournament… getting over-excited and thinking that we’re actually in with a chance of winning it. I do this every time, I just can’t help it, and it inevitably all ends in disappointment (usually with a quarter or semi final loss on penalties to Germany or Argentina)!
Anyway, it got me thinking about oil & gas companies and which team they would be if they were in the World Cup. Here are a few of my suggestions:
Exxon Mobil: Germany
You know what you’re getting. A consistently high level of performance no matter what the weather, opponents or venue. Not the prettiest to watch, but brutally efficient in their own right.
CNPC: Ivory Coast
Developing at a breakneck pace and winning a lot of things in Africa over recent years. One to watch out for in 2010.
Royal Dutch Shell: France
Not because of their flair, but because of the common opinion that they have just exited a period of greatness and now perhaps are not as formidable as they once were. Having lulled everyone into a false sense of security, will most likely turn it all around when it matters most.
BP: Netherlands
Technically gifted and often thought of as one of the world’s best, but where they finish is anybody’s guess.
QP: Portugal
Have been displaying their unique abilities in recent years, but still a striker (or LNG port) short of the finished article.
Saudi Aramco: Brazil
Have all the resources to the extent where it’s a little unfair on the rest of us…
Feel free to add your own!

Chris,
I think most companies have the potential to be any Country or in any league,
who they could represent tommorrow depends on what actions they take TODAY
The same as ourselves.
our judgement is also in question, who we work for or who is our client effects what we say or how we make our judgements.
Your metaphor is a good one based on your knowledge of each respective Company.
