Can Social Media Success Translate into Sales?: A Look at Old Spice
July 28, 2010 – 4:25 amIf a shirtless hunk proposed marriage to you via a YouTube video, would you say yes?
I probably would. Then again, if a shirtless hunk proposed anything to me I’d probably say yes.
Anyway, this totally worked for a dude who got the Old Spice guy to propose for him.
The now-fiance had reached out to Isaiah Mustafa (from the Old Spice commercials) via Twitter and got Isaiah to propose.

Ah, the power of social media.
Or, so it would seem.
Because despite the hilarious ads and the viral marketing campaign, Old Spice’s sales are dropping.
Maybe we could place the blame on the product itself. Despite all the social media interaction with customers–which people seem to be loving, by the way–maybe guys just don’t want to smell like their grandfathers.
It is certainly an interesting concept. Just because your customers are happy to follow you on Twitter and friend you on Facebook, does this translate into sales? Can we yet measure social media success as commercial success?
What are some strategies to turn social media usage into sales?

A perfect example of the benefits of marketing via social marketing.
Yes we can measure social media success as commercial success and yes it does translate into sales.
I actually heard the opposite of the Old Spice sales impact. Unless I heard incorrectly, their sales doubled. Now will they be able to maintain that sales revenue going forward? We will have to wait to see.
I am not familiar enough with marketing in social media to provide some sales strategies, however I hope to be in the near future.
Good post Jessica
