Alcohol and the office–a deadly cocktail?
April 15, 2009 – 4:02 pmHappy April 15, everyone. Hope your day isn’t too taxing. Get it? I crack myself up. (And as long as someone laughs at my jokes–even if it’s me–I’m happy.)
Well, I’m just happy that this day is over and I can put all this tax unpleasantness behind me until next year.
Plus, I already got my refund.
It’s definitely time to celebrate!

Speaking of celebrating, there was a question on the Human Resources IQ about celebrations and office parties. Someone was wondering if serving beer at an office party celebrating the end of Passover would be Kosher (haha, I’m on a roll with the terrible puns today!), or if the company would be liable for serving drinks if something happened.
Well…I have no idea. I’m not a lawyer. I haven’t even watched Law and Order: SVU in forever. (Although I should start again. Christopher Meloni, mmmm….)
But, personally, I think that if you’re working in an office, you’re an adult. (Unless you are an intern. Or it’s take your kid to work day and you’re in elementary school or something. But I digress.) And adults should be responsible for themselves.
I’ve been served alcohol at various office events, such as holiday parties. So have my coworkers. And everyone was fine.
In fact, I think a party of this type is great for employee bonding. It’s a stressful work environment everywhere now, what with the recession and layoffs and all. Sometimes it’s nice to forget all that and just celebrate with your coworkers.
Although…when there’s alcohol involved, who knows what will happen in the office when inhibitions are down.
Bosses could be told what their employees really think of them.
Cubicles could be danced on.
Cute mailroom guys could be made out with. (OK, that one’s not so bad.)
What do you think about alcohol and the office? Is it a deadly cocktail? Will it leave people shaken–or stirred? Is it OK as long as you’re straight up about the office policy to the begin with? Am I out of drink expressions? Yes. Wait, one more: Will it cause employees to drink from the keg instead of the Kool Aid? Write your thoughts below.
